New York-style Italian-American, loud and unbothered
The chicken parm at Proper is oversized on purpose, and the whole room is built to match: loud, record player going, nothing precious about it. This is New York's version of Italian-American cooking, not Toronto's, and everything comes from scratch.
Roncesvalles picked up two serious restaurants in eighteen months. Proper is the looser, louder one of the pair.

Really great neighborhood gem in Roncy. I sat at the bar and really enjoyed the view of the open kitchen. It made me want to try so many more things on the menu. The food was tasty — from a great Caesar salad to fresh burrata with delicious tomatoes to perfectly fried calamari. And the vibe was fun with friendly, kind service, too.

I really wanted to love this place! The food was okay, I am pretty disappointed with the taste. Service was amazing, our server was the highlight of our night!!

After dining at Proper a few months ago, I knew I had to bring my friends my here. The food is amazing — we ordered à la carte the first time and came back for a prefix menu for our large group. Everything was delicious. Please order the octopus (not pictured)!! In the photos, we had the spring prefix menu with notable highlights being the risotto, fish, and chicken. Incredible food for the value. Highly recommend if you’re in Roncy.

My partner and I had a great date night at Proper. The highlights of our meal were the caesar salad (probably one of the best I’ve ever had…it’s not too salty and love the little lettuce they use) + the tagliatelle. The rigatoni is a bit of a pass imo… Overall, great food, service, and interior!

Sat at the chef’s table as a couple and had an incredible experience! The food is so tasty - New York Italian style executed perfectly. The staff were lovely and you can tell they put love and care into the food. We had the mozzarella sticks (they make in house and have crazy cheese pull), Caesar salad (fresh, garlicky, has anchovies), ravioli al ragu (spinach dough - gorgeous! Sad I didn’t get a photo as we dug right in), rigatoni àlla vodka (sub spaghetti as they ran out of rigatoni), chicken parm (crispy and tender at the same time with super high quality deep fry), finished off with a classic tiramisu. We’ve already told everyone we know about Proper and will be adding this into our rotation as it’s become my favourite Italian spot!
