Smørrebrød meets Asian dishes on one menu, through a passage off Stengade
Klaptræet opened April 12, 2025, in a backhouse just off Stengade's pedestrian stretch, the kind of address you reach by ducking through a passage most tourists walk straight past. The menu puts traditional Danish smørrebrød next to a run of Asian dishes, an unusual mix for the old town's otherwise traditional dining scene.
It built a following fast in its first year, and people talk about the room as much as the food: a backhouse space set back from the street, quieter than anything right on Stengade.

Our visit to this family-run restaurant in Denmark was an absolute delight from start to finish. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming — the kind of place where you immediately feel like part of the family. We started with their beautiful smørrebrød — traditional Danish open-faced sandwiches — each one an edible work of art. The ingredients were incredibly fresh, with layers of flavor from the pickled herring, shrimp, and savory meats, all perfectly balanced with crisp vegetables, citrus, and fresh herbs. The real highlight of the experience, though, was the personal touch. Our server (and part of the family!) shared their house-made schnapps, explaining how it’s crafted from local ingredients. Tasting it felt like being invited into a Danish tradition — smooth, flavorful, and full of character, just like the people who make it. It’s rare to find a place that combines authenticity, warmth, and incredible food so effortlessly. This restaurant truly captures the heart of Danish culture — a must-visit for anyone who loves good food and genuine connection.

My friends and I had a delicious Danish traditional lunch of open faced sandwiches at this cozy restaurant. We enjoyed local beer and a liqueur made by the family who owns the restaurant. The service was excellent and I’m glad we discovered this tucked away gem.

10/10 the friendliest and most hilarious dude I've met tended the bar. And the food is amazing as well if you care about that
