Home cooking from Upper Egypt, in a 1930s merchant house
Skip the grilled standards near the temples. Sofra fills a restored 1930s merchant house a few streets back from the Corniche, wooden beams and tiled floors kept largely as they were, and cooks Upper Egyptian home food instead: molokhia, stuffed pigeon, tagines cooked slow.
It's one of the rare Luxor spots that shows up on backpacker forums and fine-dining lists alike. Ask for one of the three small private dining rooms, or sit in the main salon under the original ceiling.

Hidden amongst the small streets. Delicious local Egyptian food, catering for tourist. Very reasonable price. Have to use cash (EGP or USD); could not accept credit cards.

Our tour guide recommended Sofra. We went here on a Friday during the prayer and our server excused himself to go to the Mosque to pray for a bit. Nice gesture. Dishes were traditional. Feels like eating at someone home.

My favorite restaurants in Egypt. Super tasty food, great service with absolutely gorgeous decor and great atmosphere. And so reasonably priced. We loved it!

Good Egyptian food. Different than you see other places. I had the pigeon which was delicious and a few mezze. All tasty. The waiter Gagab was nice and explained the food a bit. Atmosphere is nice.

The right equilibrium between traditional Egyptian cuisine and a pleasant atmosphere. This is the better bistro restaurant you are looking for in Luxor.
