Finland's first soul food kitchen, inside Tampere's market hall
Rahu Keita and Maija Mansika opened Maira in Tampere's historic market hall in July 2024, calling it Finland's first dedicated soul food restaurant. The menu crosses African, Caribbean, and African American cooking: mafe in peanut sauce, a tomato-based stew called maira that gave the restaurant its name, and cassava couscous known as attieke.
It runs lunch hours only, closing by mid-afternoon most days and earlier on Saturdays, matching the market hall's own schedule. The menu rotates, so a dish you find one week might not return for a month.

Had the Maira and Hibiscus juice. Food was unbelievably good, the portion sizes were big. The customer was very friendly, the chef was also very chatty/friendly. I'll definitely be coming back again 😊

Super good attiéké and mafe, delicious hibiscus with mint and ginger with pineapple fresh drinks 👌🏽I'd recommend it definitely, no doubt! The service on point, you can't ask for more. Beatiful music and atmosphere. Thanks!

5 stars are not enough for this place, it's 6/5! My friend tried the fish dish and I had mafe with soy strips. There were a lot of flavors in this dish without it being overwhelming. We had late lunch / early dinner here when the kauppahalli was very quiet and peaceful. I definitively want to come back to try more food!
