Socialist-canteen design and Hungarian classics on Liszt Ferenc tér
Menza took the visual language of the 1970s state canteen, orange and brown, moulded plastic, and applied it to a restaurant serving proper Hungarian food. The joke has aged into something closer to a period room.
It sits on Liszt Ferenc tér, the pedestrian square behind the Music Academy where most tables are outside from spring to autumn. The menu keeps the classics on it permanently, so this is a reliable first stop for anyone eating goulash, paprikás or somlói galuska for the first time.

We visited Menza Étterem és Kávézó to try Hungarian goulash after having goulash in Vienna. We wanted to compare the two styles, and it was interesting to see the difference. The Hungarian goulash here was more like a soup, served with homemade pinched pasta. It was very tasty and comforting. We also had the honey-mustard Mangalica pork chop with potatoes fried in duck fat and grilled vegetables. The pork was tender, flavorful, and delicious. A great place to enjoy traditional Hungarian flavors in Budapest!

As someone who has visited Budapest many times before, this was surprisingly our first time dining at Menza. We chose the restaurant after reading the excellent Google reviews, and now we completely understand why it has such a high rating. It exceeded our expectations in every possible way. We were actually very lucky to get a table without a reservation. About thirty minutes after we arrived, we noticed that many people had to wait for a table, so I would definitely recommend making a reservation if you plan to visit. For dinner, my wife ordered the Chicken Schnitzel served with creamy mashed potatoes, while I chose the grilled chicken breast with coconut rice. We also shared the French fries with avocado dip as a starter. To drink, we tried the homemade pineapple and mango iced teas. Every single dish and drink was absolutely delicious. The ingredients tasted fresh, the presentation was beautiful, and the portions were generous. The coconut rice was a unique and wonderful surprise, and the homemade iced teas were incredibly refreshing and full of natural flavor. What impressed us just as much as the food was the outstanding service. Even though the restaurant was very busy, every member of the staff remained friendly, attentive, and professional. We would especially like to thank Gábor, who made our evening even more enjoyable with his warm hospitality, genuine kindness, and excellent service. The atmosphere was lively yet comfortable, the interior was stylish, and everything was well organized despite the restaurant being almost full. It is easy to see why Menza is considered one of the best restaurants in Budapest. We will definitely return on our next visit to Budapest and will happily recommend Menza to our friends and family. Thank you to the entire team for such a memorable dining experience. This restaurant truly deserves every one of its five stars!

Very reasonably priced dishes. I had the roast beef with fried potatoes and onion rings. The beef was cooked perfectly as requested (medium-rare) and was incredibly tender and was a big serving size for the price of 6k HUF. This place can get very busy, and given my experience, I can understand why!

Every dish was delicious. The dish made with Mangalica pork, which is considered one of Hungary’s national treasures, was excellent, and the steak and risotto were also very good. It is a slightly expensive restaurant, but considering the quality of the food and the location, I think the prices are reasonable. The only disappointing point was the condition of the restroom. When I arrived at the restaurant and used it, it was clean. However, when I visited it again before leaving, it was quite dirty. I assume this was mainly due to how other customers had used it, but I would still appreciate regular checks by the staff.
