Benne dosa made the Davanagere way
The benne dosa started at a stall a woman named Chennamma ran outside a Davanagere theatre in 1928, frying dosas on cast iron and finishing each with butter churned that same morning. Mumbai can't get enough of it, and a new version pops up most months.
This 2,500 square foot room in Borivali East flies in its butter and batter from Davanagere and leaves the method alone. The benne masala dosa comes buttered at the edges, the gini dosa is thin and sharp, the baba dosa turns up the heat. Also worth ordering: kadi patta cashew idli, stuffed medu vada, lace edged vellayappam.

We visited Davangere Benne last night looking for an authentic South Indian experience that turned out to be a mild disappointment. Food: 3/5: Benne podi Masala dosa: Just about okay. The dosa was too small for something that's priced around 279 plus taxes in Borivali East. It was not crispy. The masala was good. The coconut chutney was a terrible disappointment - not fresh, not creamy and no better than an average udupi joint in Mumbai. Sambar / Onion chutney were par for the course. Panneer Schezwan Dosa: The flavour and taste profile was good. Jini Dosa: This saved the day for us. Made very well. Recommended. Service: 2/5 Reception: We were received well, short wait in a comfortable couch before we were ushered to our table. Table service: Poor. We had to wait long for water to be served and they ignored my request for some ice and had to remind them twice before I received it. The servers were confused with orders and table numbers and confidently served us a dosa that was not ours. We had to return it and wait another 15 mins to get it. The serving person seemed more interested in my zomato rating ( and actually insisting) than actually focussing on the service. The place was packed as it was a Saturday evening - and they were likely overwhelmed. Significant room for improvement overall.

Great food and amazing ambience. A special mention to Mr. Gagan, whose thoughtful recommendations and warm hospitality made the experience even better. Definitely worth a visit!
