Dinner under 17th-century vaults built to store gunpowder

Bacchus sits inside two stone-arched chambers cut into Mdina's old fortifications. The Knights used these rooms to store gunpowder, and the vaulted ceilings still carry that history.

The menu covers Mediterranean and Maltese dishes for both lunch and dinner, plus a garden terrace right against the bastion walls for anyone who wants sun instead of stone. It's been a fixture in Mdina for years, known as much for the setting as the food.

I initially just came in for a glass of wine, but in the end stayed for a lovely dinner. I chose the local fish with lemon ginger butter sauce and fig chutney, and I enjoyed every second of it! The service of Frank was outstanding. I enjoyed the atmosphere, the lovely wine, food and service. Highly recommended.

I had the pleasure of being served by Frank, and his service truly made the experience exceptional. From the moment I sat down, he was attentive, friendly, and incredibly professional. What stood out most was Frank’s deep knowledge of the menu. He was able to confidently explain dishes, offer thoughtful recommendations, and answer every question I had with clarity and enthusiasm. Frank struck the perfect balance between being present and giving the clients space to enjoy the time. His warm attitude and genuine care for the experience did not go unnoticed. Thank you, Frank, for going above and beyond — you made the visit memorable, and I look forward to coming back!

Bacchus is an absolutely beautiful place to enjoy a memorable dinner. The ambiance is charming and inviting making it perfect for a good vibe right off the start. The wine service is exceptional. It was truly the best I’ve experienced. My wine glass was never empty. I didn’t need to ask for anything. They came when they were supposed to. Our server, Joseph (Yousef?), was outstanding. He is warm, personable and attentive without being intrusive. I laughed a few times. One of the menus had an identical side and he quickly replaced it. The lamb was delightful, perfectly cooked, and full of flavor. My only minor suggestion would be to serve the peas on the side rather than puree on top but that’s purely personal taste. Every other aspect of the meal was wonderful and I left feeling completely satisfied. The tomato soup is really good, get it. The lamb was a little rich. Still enjoyable. I would highly recommend Bacchus to anyone looking for a sophisticated dining experience in Mdina. A true gem!
