Kitabo

Pemba's own bookshop and press, built for African literature
Kitabo is a bookshop and a small publishing house on Avenida Josina Machel. It focuses on Mozambican and wider African literature, at a time when most book access in the country still runs through Maputo. It has given book prizes to top graduating students at the Catholic University of Mozambique's Pemba campus. Its own launches have pulled in crowds of over 200 people.
It also backs the Clube de Livro, Baía de Pemba, a reading club that meets in public spaces around the city, including Praça do Metical, to keep people reading outside the classroom. For a provincial capital with limited cultural infrastructure, this is an independent literary anchor, not a chain outpost.
