PADI dive resort on the beach, once known as The Whaler

Underwater Explorer runs out of the old Whaler building, right in Ponta do Ouro's campsite area. PADI 5-star dive resort with reed casitas and two en-suite rooms on the beach. Martin Holman runs the diving side, with year-round adventure dives that follow the season instead of a fixed schedule.

Rustic by design, not by budget. Reviewers rank it among the better B&Bs in town, mostly because the diving and the rooms are run by the same team instead of split between separate operators.

Perfectly located right on the beach in a safe environment. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. We didn't stay in the rooms of Under Water Explorer itself but it looked very Hostel-like and cozy. We had some fantastic dives with the locals Joao and Namasake as Divemasters with beautiful marine life. I'd also like to mention the skipper Tito, who always brought us safely through the rough seas to the dive sites. Highly recommended and reasonably priced.

I recently stayed at Underwater Explorer and completed my Open Water course with Namasake as my instructor and dive buddy. Aside from being an absolutely fantastic place, I thoroughly enjoyed the entire dive course. I genuinely don’t think I could have had a better instructor—he is friendly, understanding, professional, and incredibly knowledgeable. An all-around amazing mentor. I can say with complete certainty that he was the best I could have asked for. I felt comfortable, happy, and excited for every single dive. I’m so grateful for this experience at Underwater Explorer, which is such a welcoming and positive environment, filled with friendly staff and wonderful people. I highly recommend doing your dive course here or at the very least, staying here for a holiday. What an incredible place:)

Completed my Open Water PADI with Michael, he was unbelievably helpful and supportive throughout the whole process, breaking all the skills down ensuring I got comfortable underwater while staying safe. A great place and people.

Best place for dive and stay in Ponta. Great vibes at the beach camp, nice rooms by the beach. Martin who manages the accommodation is super friendly. The diving is very well organised, equipment in great conditions, and small groups which is very beneficial in sites like Pinacles. Herb the owner is very knowledgeable about the area and made the experience very smooth. We had some amazing dives with lot of sharks getting very close.
