Umurobyi Lodge

Eight rooms, one infinity pool, and Ivan at the end of the peninsula road
Umurobyi Lodge sits at the end of the tarmac road on Kibuye's peninsula. Eight rooms, an infinity pool aimed straight at the lake. Ivan, the Belgian owner, runs it himself. Reviewers mention him by name more than they mention the rooms.
The pool deck turns into the bar in late afternoon. Sundowners, not a cocktail list. The lodge's Instagram (@umurobyilodge.rw) has close to 12,000 followers, built almost entirely on pool-and-lake photos. That's a big number for eight rooms.
Good to know
- Pool deck doubles as the bar from late afternoon.
- Furthest lodge on the peninsula road, allow extra driving time.

Umurobyi Lodge had been on our wishlist for a while, so we were delighted to finally book a three-night stay. It exceeded every expectation. The setting is almost otherworldly, with mesmerising views across Lake Kivu and its islands. From the moment we arrived, greeted with such warmth and genuine hospitality, it felt less like checking into a hotel and more like being welcomed to an exclusive—but wonderfully inclusive—private house party. Every aspect of the lodge has been thoughtfully considered. The architecture and interior design work together seamlessly to create a contemporary, elegant and practical aesthetic that is both sophisticated and completely at ease with its surroundings. Around every corner are beautifully landscaped gardens, secluded shady spots, inviting seating areas and different spaces to relax, chat, read or simply soak up the scenery. Whether it's sunset drinks by the water's edge, kayaking, boat trips, swimming in the lake or the infinity pool, or simply lingering over great conversation, there's something here for everyone. Our room was more like a private suite, complete with a spacious terrace overlooking the lake. The bathroom was beautiful yet entirely functional, stocked with everything we could possibly need, while the bed was exceptionally comfortable—waking up to that view each morning was a privilege. Every detail had been considered. I'm sometimes wary of ‘all-inclusive’ experiences, but I needn't have been. The food, wine and beer offerings were consistently outstanding, with imaginative dishes that showcased the quality and diversity of local ingredients paired with great cellar choices. Every meal felt fresh, generous and carefully prepared. The owners, Ivan and Aysha, are the heart of Umurobyi Lodge. They are completely hands-on, and their generosity, kindness and genuine care for their guests, staff and the environment are evident in everything they do. We enjoyed wonderful conversations, shared stories (and more than a little wine), and left feeling we'd made new friends rather than simply discovered a great place to stay. Animal lovers are in for a treat. Their two gorgeous, incredibly friendly Bearded Collies quickly found a place in our hearts. The daily 8 a.m. walk with Ivan is a lovely way to explore the peninsula—and Pollack is practically an Olympic swimmer, happily accompanying guests while they kayak! We've been home for three days now, and the whole experience has already taken on an almost dreamlike quality, as though it couldn't quite have been real. That's probably the highest compliment we can pay it. Umurobyi Lodge is something genuinely special. If you want to experience Rwandan hospitality at its very best, don't hesitate. We certainly won't—we're already planning our return.

One of the best stays in our travels ( and we do travel). The level of attentiveness and kindness is unmatched, food was amazing, location and facilities serene and unique. Highly recommend this place, we were sorry we only booked one night.

One of the best places that i have ever stayed in with the most welcoming and loving hosts/staff. They have great activities, a very clean pool, and amazing food/drinks. I am especially grateful as the hosts went out of their way to make sure myself and my friends were alright after we experienced a car crash heading back to kigali. 11/10 experience overall.
