Wine tunnels running for kilometres under Trg svobode

Vinag 1847 takes its name from the year the wine house was founded, and it now holds one of the largest wine cellars in central Europe. The tunnels run for kilometres under Trg svobode in the center of Maribor, and you can walk sections of them on a guided tour.

Tastings happen both underground and at ground level, pairing local and regional wines with cured meats and cheese. It's a working cellar first, but it's also become one of the things people do in Maribor: a cool, vaulted space cut into rock under the street.

Great experience! Good value for money too at €20 for a tour and 3 wine samples

We did a great wine tasting here and had a wonderful tour. The guide was incredibly informative and clearly passionate about her job. We paid for the basic package which included three glasses of wine for 20€. The wine was very delicious, especially the white wine.

This tour was led by David, who is a very knowledgeable and funny guide. We learned a lot of new facts about not only Slovenian wine but also the history of the country! I recommend this tour to anyone, wine or not wine lovers. We ended with three fine wines and the rest of the day was history!

Amazing place to discover the largest wine cellar in a town under Maribor’s city centre, you descend 23 steps to the Vinag wine cellar. The guided tour with wine tasting was entertaining and full of historical stories. You walk through the tunnels of the wine cellar which has a total length of 2 kilometres! The stories of how wine was made and that you can walk among more than 144 wooden barrels shows how vast this cellar was under the town. If you can try out going into one of the large concrete wine barrel to see where was was stored - it's an amazing feeling.

The tour was very comprehensive. Our guide brought life to a cellar that is no longer in use, except for some storage. We enjoyed the tasting of all 4 wines (chardonnay brut, rose, savignon, orange). We did have an accompanying cheese plate, which at 30€ for 2 was a bit pricey. You got 2 types of 🧀. The girl serving us was very informative about the wine. They were very patient with our group as we chatted, in their very pleasant tasting room, for 90 mins.
