Swiss chocolate and raclette in Uruguay's Swiss colony town
Raclette and hot chocolate in a town Swiss immigrants founded in the 1860s. It's the one place in Uruguay where that combination actually makes sense, and the gelato is made in house.
There are sugar-free versions of everything on the menu, which is rare for a spot this small. Nueva Helvecia doesn't have much of a food scene beyond it, but this place has built a following well past its own streets.

Good, unique products. The aesthetics of the place don't match the spirit of what one imagines. Something important, which is also neglected, is the background music. If it were my business, I would create a suitable playlist. When we were there, they were playing some cumbia music that was impossible to understand. They have a lot of room for improvement, but I think that's the easiest thing to do. The most difficult aspect, offering a good selection of products, is something they've already achieved.

The place is beautiful and the food is delicious, but the service leaves much to be desired. The young woman who served us both times we came didn't give us a chance to think, rushed us to buy things, and was quite rude. A real shame.
