A flower garden cafe on the Hwange bypass

Loco Cafe opened on Bypass Island in January 2026, across from the Engen garage on the edge of Hwange Colliery. It built buzz in local Facebook groups as the Coal City's newest cafe before it even opened, then got written up by South Africa's go!/Netwerk24 travel title within months, which called it a cafe built around a flower garden, a step up from the usual roadside stop.

The menu covers coffee, tea and cocoa alongside Zimbabwean traditional meals, breakfast served mid-morning and lunch after noon. The furniture came from local carpenter Woodies Shack instead of a catalogue, and it shows in the fit-out.

Good to know

Breakfast runs roughly 9am to noon, lunch noon to 3pm; check current hours before a special trip.
Prices span from about $1 for a coffee to around $17 for a full plate, based on posted menus.

Stopped here for coffee on our journey from Victoria Falls to Hwange Safari Lodge. Nice cup of coffee and small selection of cakes available. There's also toilets, petrol and a small shop. Interesting steam engine.

Food was really good 10/10. but the service was a big letdown 2/5. We had to wait quite long while seated and our table was dirty. We ended up having to go look for the staff ourselves only to find them standing around chatting instead of checking on customers. There is also a bit of noise as there are trucks constantly passing by. No one came to ask if we needed anything else or wanted to order more. It’s a shame because the food deserves better service. With more attentive staff, this place could be much improved.
