The 1933 Strathcona, reborn as the independent Union Hotel
Steps from Union Station, the CN Tower and Scotiabank Arena, this 1933 building spent decades as the no-frills Strathcona Hotel before Silver Hotel Group gutted it in 2023. It reopened in early 2025 with 189 rooms, priced well under the glass towers around it.
Local art and neighborhood nods run through the redesign, down to a lobby lounge called Humble Donkey. There's a fitness centre, a courtyard, and a second floor meeting room named The 6ix.
Good to know
- Rooms on the higher floors face away from the rail corridor and are noticeably quieter.
- The Humble Donkey lounge off the lobby works well for a coffee or a drink before catching a train next door.

Room 816 had several issues, although there were also some very positive aspects to our stay. The room and shower were both extremely small. As a larger person, (not like, exceptionally large,) it was nearly impossible to enter the shower because there was so little space between the door and the wall. I scraped the skin on my arm and stomach while trying to get inside. Someone slightly larger may not be able to use it at all. We were provided only two sets of towels for two people staying four nights, which was not sufficient. I prefer not to contact the front desk or have housekeeping enter the room while we are away. When I called for additional towels, they had still not arrived more than 30 minutes later, and we had to leave before they were delivered.. The live television selection was limited, the ceiling light was unreliable or delayed, and the Wi-Fi was usable but not very good. Speeds below 10 Mbps are disappointing in 2026, particularly in a hotel located in a major city. On the positive side, the hotel lobby is beautiful, the beds and pillows were extremely comfortable, the location is excellent, and the room was very quiet. Overall, it was a decent stay, but the room size and the issues above affected the experience.

Just wrapping up a trip with my grandmother and I have to give accolades to this sweet little hotel. Right from check-in with a friendly moustachioed man I felt right at home. The rooms are small but clean and beautiful. The bed was so comfortable- I’ve never slept so well away from home- and the rooms were quiet. I love all the little details that went into the hotel ❤️ But the thing that takes the cake was the Humble Donkey cafe where we had breakfast every day. Sophie and Milo were so warm and welcoming that I felt like they were long lost friends. It helps that the food was delicious each time we went as well. I highly recommend the banana bread French toast! But it was Sopie and Milo that made this experience unforgettable for my grandma and I. I will never forget your kind hearts! Much love from Manitoba ❤️❤️❤️

We had a wonderful stay at this hotel, and we would especially like to recognize Ady, the housekeeper on the 12th floor, for her outstanding service. Our room was spotless, and the bed was made beautifully. Everything was fresh, clean, and perfectly organized. It was clear that she paid attention to every detail and took great pride in her work. What stood out the most was how kind and thoughtful Ady was. She always asked if we needed anything, whether it was extra coffee, towels, or other supplies. She made sure we had everything we needed and always greeted us with a warm smile. Thank you, Ady, for your professionalism, kindness, and exceptional service. You made our stay even more enjoyable. The hotel is fortunate to have someone like you on their team!

A comfortable and well-maintained hotel in a great location. A special thank you to Mr. Ratnesh at the front desk. He resolved a personal issue for us with remarkable speed, professionalism, and efficiency. His willingness to go the extra mile made a real difference and greatly improved our one-week stay. We are sincerely grateful for all of his help. I would also like to recognize Sophie from the bar and restaurant. Having worked in the hospitality industry for over 25 years, I can immediately recognize outstanding service. Sophie is an exceptional employee. Despite the busy breakfast service and the pressure of serving so many guests with only two staff members, she consistently remained friendly, welcoming, and smiling. Her work ethic, professionalism, and positive attitude are truly impressive. Sophie is a rare gem and a tremendous asset to your hotel. I hope she receives the recognition she deserves.

This hotel has a great location. It's just a few minutes' walk from Union Station, making it very convenient to get around the city and access public transportation. My only complaint is that the soundproofing is poor. I could clearly hear guests in the next room talking loudly, as well as noise from the street throughout the night. Overall, the location is excellent, but if you're a light sleeper, you may want to bring earplugs or consider another hotel.
