A gentlemen's club bar inside the Winter Palace

Royal Bar sits inside the Sofitel Winter Palace, all dark wood and leather like an English gentlemen's club, nothing overtly Egyptian about it. The draw is classic cocktails and a long spirits list, poured in a room that hasn't changed much in decades.

It's the kind of hotel bar that outlasts whatever's trendy elsewhere in Luxor. Quiet, formal, mostly hotel guests, with the occasional local in for an occasion.

Smart casual only when indoors but you can wear casual in their garden or their Nile terrace. If you’re not guests, you can buy a voucher for 500 pounds at the reception. Garden was beautiful and the building is certainly storied (Howard Carter announced the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb here). They undercharged us by 80 pounds and asked us to pay for that but beyond this oversight, service was great.

Spent a couple of peaceful hours in the Royal bar, enjoying the splender of this old colonial building. Amazingly the cost of a Sakara beer (195Egp)was cheaper than the Kings head pub which was 200Egp, I know the one I choose on my return visit to Luxor !!!

Great old world setting. We visited to get some pre-dinner cocktails. It was a bit of a let down as it had run out of some drinks. No lime, no campari, no bourbon meant the first 3 drinks we ordered from menu were not available. Worth taking a visit though. I'm sure they will sort out missing drinks
