Tryggvaskáli

Selfoss’s oldest house, now its best dinner

Tryggvaskáli is the oldest building in Selfoss, built in 1890 as lodging for the crew constructing the first bridge over the Ölfusá river. It now holds the town's most characterful restaurant, with low ceilings and river views.

The kitchen sticks to seasonal Icelandic food, fish and lamb mostly. History and setting carry some of the appeal, but the cooking holds its own. This is the place for a proper sit down dinner, not a quick bite.

Come here because I saw they had hourse and whale and they where both really good and it was great to try those new things. Just keep in mind before going that this is a fancy restaurant and not a budget option. Picture of horse in description

We stopped here on our last night in Selfoss and had a wonderful meal. The restaurant is set in a really charming house right in the center of town, which gives it a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. The service was warm and genuinely kind. We shared the salmon and tempura appetizers, and both were absolutely delicious. A lovely way to end our trip, and I highly recommend it!

Beautiful restaurant in the oldest building in Selfoss. This place was quite busy, so I would recommend a reservation if you can. We were lucky to get in without one, but saw a few peplople who arrived after us be turned away. Had the seared cabbage with frispy potato salad and Tryggva burger. Both were delicious!

Absolutely amazing food — both the salmon and the cod. The fish was perfectly prepared, juicy, and incredibly well seasoned. Truly a luxurious experience for the taste buds. Visiting this restaurant is definitely worth it. We would also like to thank the staff for their kind and welcoming approach. Thank you so much.
