New and secondhand books in a converted machiya on Shin-Omiya shotengai

Skip the tourist grid. This bookshop sits on a covered shopping street in Shichiku, a residential stretch well north of central Kyoto, in a machiya cleaned up rather than gutted. New and secondhand books share the shelves, including small independent publishers the bigger Kyoto shops skip.

A cafe followed in March 2026, next door to the Kogetsu confectioner. A gallery space is planned after that. It's a sign of where Kyoto's newer independent bookshops are choosing to land: not the center, but streets people actually live on.
