Monaka wafers stuffed with fresh fruit, not just bean paste
Skip the plain red bean filling. Nikko Monaka stuffs its crisp wafer shells with fresh seasonal fruit instead, a twist on the classic wagashi that actually makes sense to eat on the walk back from the shrines.
It's a 15 minute walk from Tobu Nikko Station on Shimohatsuishimachi, close enough to the main shrine approach to grab a box before you head home. Hours stretch later in spring and summer, 9am to 5:30pm.

Visited on November 1, 2025, eating my way along the way from Nikko Station. These desserts are a must-try! The outer layer is incredibly crispy, and the filling has multiple layers—definitely worth buying and trying! They have chestnut, Mont Blanc, ice cream, and soft, chewy mochi skin. The sunny weather with a gentle breeze made it a little awkward to eat outside (there's seating inside, but I chose to enjoy the view from the outside, though it did attract several other groups of customers to try them).

Strawberry mochi was so tasty. I’m glad I bought another one to take on the train! The wafer strawberry was good too, but I prefer the mochi.

Enjoying the beautiful scenery of Nikko, I took a leisurely stroll along the Nikko Romantic Road from Shinkyo Bridge to Tobu Nikko Station. As I walked, peeking into shops that caught my eye, I stumbled upon this charming little shop and decided to stop in. Upon entering, I learned that their specialties are Nikko's unique "monaka shaped like the Three Wise Monkeys" and the very unusual "fruit daifuku." ♦︎ Three Wise Monkeys Monaka The faces of the famous "see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil" monkeys are clearly embossed on the surface, making it incredibly cute! The taste is a classic, unpretentious style. It's a comforting, ordinary monaka without anything particularly unusual. The size and flavor are perfect for eating on the go. ♦︎ Fruit Daifuku Since I wasn't going to eat it right away, I decided against it for portability reasons, but this fruit monaka is unique in that the "skin is wrapped in monaka skin"! The combination of the crispy texture of monaka and the chewy texture of daifuku at the same time is intriguing, isn't it? The monaka, with its Nikko-inspired design, is also perfect for photos. There's also an eat-in space inside the shop, so you can enjoy a relaxing cafe experience. Since it's located along the main road, it's great that you can easily stop by on your way from Shinkyo Bridge to the station, like I did.

We stopped by here while sightseeing in Nikko, and if you're a sweets lover, this is a shop you should definitely make your destination. Their signature dish, the Fruit Daifuku Monaka, is made to order after you order. The crispy and fragrant monaka, the chewy daifuku, the elegantly sweet bean paste, and the fresh strawberries. The balance of ingredients was excellent, and it was impressive that it wasn't too sweet. And personally, I highly recommend the mitarashi. This is a mitarashi made with miso and seasoned with sansho pepper. Unlike typical sweet mitarashi, it has a sweet and salty taste with a tangy sansho aroma, which, combined with the fragrant monaka, makes for a very adult flavor. I would also recommend it for those who aren't big on sweet things. The ingredients used in the monaka, daifuku, and mitarashi are all sourced from Tochigi Prefecture, which really captures the essence of Nikko and the local area. The three-wise monkey-themed monaka look adorable, and the interior has a modern, Japanese, and calming atmosphere. It's also great that you can eat in. If it's your first time, we recommend the strawberry, and for your second or returning visit, we recommend the sansho miso mitarashi. This is a shop I'd like to visit again in a different season.

Bought strawberry daifuku, and chestnut mont blanc takeaway. Amazing dessert that’s not too sweet. Strawberry was super tasty and nice texture daifuku. Mont blanc here is easily one of the best mont blanc I have ever tasted. Will be back again for dine in!!
