Burgers, sushi and mussels by the Danė

The menu here refuses to pick a lane: burgers and pizza next to sushi, beef tartare and mussels, with what the kitchen pushes shifting from lunch to dinner. Ask what's good that day rather than ordering off habit.

Salamandra sits in the rebuilt Salamander building on Žvejų gatvė, once Klaipėda's 16th-century city scales and later a German shoe shop. It shares the building with the cocktail bar Bromas and a hotel upstairs, and the dining room looks straight onto the river. Weekends run until 2am.

The food is excellent, but the service could be better. First we were told there was no table available outside and the waiting time for being served inside would be more than 1,5 hrs. After deciding for a different place we walked by and noticed several free tables so we inquired again if we understood correctly: but a different waitress told us service times were less than half an hour. Surprised, but we gladly accepted the available outside table. Service was good during our appetizers and main course, but unfortunately nobody told us the kitchen would be closed for dessert. We accepted this and were about to leave, when all of a sudden dessert was possible after all. (But only one choice). We ordered and then waited for more than half an hour. Seats and tables were already removed around us (which does give you a feeling of inhospitality), but apart from the coffee no dessert arrived. We finally went inside to offer to pay, and asked to cancel the dessert since we believed they forgot about it. Two main teaching points: be pro active in admitting you forgot the order and second also take the lead in finding a solution for the customer. (In this case no apologies were made and we had to suggest to take it of the bill). Unnecessary to say service is just as important as the quality of the food.

Everything was great, but I can’t give 5 stars because the salmon and avocado salad came without any dressing. When I asked for one, I was given balsamic vinegar and charged extra for it. That shouldn’t happen.
