The Strand Yangon

Yangon's 1901 icon, back after five years dark
Kipling and Maugham both slept here, back when the Sarkies brothers, the same family behind Raffles in Singapore, ran this stretch of the Yangon waterfront. The Strand shut for over five years through the pandemic and came back in May 2025 after a six-month restoration.
All 31 suites keep their original teakwood floors and colonial-era antiques. Sarkies Bar quietly reopened in January, months ahead of the rest, so it's already the one place in the hotel that feels lived-in again.

"The rooms are incredibly spacious and immaculate. The customer service is truly top-tier; Jazz, Helena, Myat, and Het are all outstanding. Their warm smiles and genuine willingness to help made my entire stay exceptional."

Booked this old colonial hotel as recommended by a friend as we have a project in Yangon. Stayed for 3 nights from 01 to 04 May, 2026. Those who like nostalgia will probably enjoy. Our suite is spacious but dimly lit and lacking modern amenities. Couldn’t boil my own drinking water. Facilities , fixtures and fittings are old. Bathroom very old style with old high bathtub (no screen or sufficient safety handles), shower unit is small with shower head not working well and mixer not doing its job. Water pressure from shower head was low. They tried to fix it but … Soundproofing wasn’t good. Our suite was on the first floor. Every night we can hear the booming sound of music from downstairs - all the 3 nights. Punctuality to be ready to serve breakfast at 6:30am was not adhered to for 2 mornings. The last morning we asked them to pack our breakfast as we have to leave early. Worst was the Internet connectivity. I had to urgently access some app and mails for business and personal uses. Just cant can through. I had to go to my friend’s hotel at Pan Pacific to use their strong internet connection! What a shame ! Only saving grace are the staff as they are patient and courteous with lots of apologies to the lapses. My guess is the present hotel owner and management are not willing to spend on upgrading core basic offerings that all major international brands are doing. By the way I have stayed at The Raffles Hotel, Singapore and The E & O Hotel In Penang (all part of Sarkies legacy) and their overall experience were excellent. My written email to the General Manager to request for his reply was delegated to low staff. Tells me he is not taking my feedback seriously. And to think that this is not a very busy hotel as most times it’s less than a handful staying guests that I have seen. Disappointed!

Always enjoy my stay here. The hotel is not what it once was, but given the situation in this country, I think it still deserves 10/10. I esp enjoy my experience at the bar and breakfast.

We had a terrific stay at The Strand. The Executive Suite was large, nicely appointed and comfortable. We were very impressed with the service of our butler, Chris. The hotel breakfast was served a la carte, and was delicious. We dined at the hotel most nights, and found the food to be excellent and reasonably priced. We are already planning a return visit.
