Farmer-grown coffee and petroglyphs on Maderas' slopes
Finca Magdalena is a 350-hectare cooperative farm where Nicaraguan families grow coffee on the lower slopes of Volcán Maderas. The cafe sells whole beans grown right on the property, and this was one of the island's first community-run tourism projects.
A short trail behind the cafe passes petroglyphs carved into volcanic rock, the same pre-Columbian style you'll see fragments of in the Altagracia and Sacramento museums. The coffee tour runs about two hours and covers growing and processing, not just a cup at the end.
Good to know
- The coffee tour runs about 2 hours; reserve ahead since space is limited.
- Look for the petroglyphs on the short trail behind the cafe.
