French bistro cooking by the old town bridge

Rive Gauche serves French bistro food at the foot of Gamle Bybro, the old bridge that leads into Bakklandet. The menu sticks to bistro classics, with a wine list to match and a room that plays up the Parisian name.

The spot by the river and bridge is one of the best-looking in Trondheim. It suits a proper dinner more than a quick bite.

Food was exceptional for the most part. I had the snails to start followed by turbot. Sadly the potatoes that came with my turbot were stone cold. When I raised this with the waitress she wasn’t particularly interested. The service in general was poor. It started well but following my starter, it got worse. Despite there only being 9 occupied tables, it was a very long wait for my main course. Then more than 30 minutes before my plate was cleared. I wanted to order dessert but gave up because I couldn’t get the waitress’s attention. When I asked for the bill, it came quickly. But the waitress just dropped the machine on the table and walked off. The food here is lovely. Just a shame that 3 wait staff can’t effectively wait on 9 tables.

The food was great from appetizer to main and dessert. It was very busy on Saturday night, so the wait between courses was quite long (over 30 minutes in my case), and I was already starving. But the service was really friendly, attentive, and gave helpful information about the dishes, which I highly appreciated.

Very good food, but the service needs a lot of learning!! I ordered two bottles of wine, both were opened somewhere behind and credenced to me already opened. Also, the don't have proper flutes for the Champagne (bottle) I ordered, it was poured in a normal wine glass. But the staff were friendly, but that alone doesn't make a 4600 Krone dinner for two better.... there was no owner and no manager, only two youngsters, both teenagers!
