Spiral stone wells still irrigating fields after 1,500 years

Farmers here still pull groundwater the way they did roughly 1,500 years ago. The Cantalloc aqueducts are spiral-shaped stone wells that reach the water table without pumps, and a handful still irrigate fields in the valley east of town. That keeps this from feeling like a roped-off ruin.

Skip the walk and grab a taxi or mototaxi from the plaza. The spirals photograph better in person than in any guidebook shot. Go in the morning, there's no shade once the sun climbs.

Good to know

  • Go by taxi or mototaxi, it's not walkable from the plaza.
  • Morning visits are better, there's no shade once the sun is high.

Walked there easily from the plaza de armas in Nazca, and did self guided tour. 10 sols entry fee also covered two other miradors and Los Paredones. One caution: use bug spray before you go!! Sand flies ate my legs alive and I itched for three days afterwards!!

Very interesting place, anyway worth to do ot as a part of a tour as the system can be understood better and although for additional infos like surrounding trees and former animal lives (before most of the trees were cut 😔)

AMAZING!!! 1500+ year old engineering feat... with clean water at the bottom and little fish proving these to be healthy, working Aqueducts in the desert. Well worth a visit (best with a guide for a full appreciation) and only a few km out of town.

Wow! If you're in Nasca for a couple of days I highly recommend visiting the Cantalloc Aquaducts. We walked from the central town area, using google maps, took an hour to dawdle through the neighbourhoods. The Aquaducts are simply stunning, set in a shaded, peaceful space. An engineering marvel, still functioning, your mind will be blown by the amount of rocks placed, pattern formation. We spent approx 2hrs here, just taking in the scale and beauty at this unique site. Highly recommend 👌 Note- entrance fee to be paid at front gate where you'll also find the bathroom.

Very interesting and really impressive aquaducts with water in them and even fish. They are more than 20, build by small stones and with spiral routes to the bottom.
