Film cameras, Walkmans and cassettes, over tea in Karataş

Order a tea first. Then start digging through the shelves of Eski Moda, a shop stitched inside Kırkmerdiven, the long-running café on a stone street near the Asansör lift. Film and digital cameras, Walkmans, Discmans, turntables, cassettes, records, CDs and odd little vintage objects fill the space.

Browsing here feels more like hanging out than shopping, which is the whole idea of hiding a shop inside a café instead of behind a storefront. Karataş has turned into İzmir's second-hand quarter: the Thrift & Vintage market runs nearby and Müstesna Garaj shares the same address.

Good to know

• It is inside Kırkmerdiven, so you can order a coffee and go through the shelves without being hurried.
• The historic Asansör is right there, combine the two and walk down the Forty Steps afterwards.
