Gorilla Conservation Café

Third-wave coffee on Portal Road that funds gorilla conservation near Bwindi.
Gorilla Conservation Café on Portal Road is run by Conservation Through Public Health, the NGO Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka founded to link human health, livestock and mountain gorilla survival around Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The coffee beans come from farmers in that buffer zone. Buying them at a fair price helps keep people from clearing gorilla habitat for farmland.
The espresso made Coffee Review's Top 30 list in 2018, a real result for a shop this size. Order a bag of the Kanyonyi blend beans to take home. They're roasted for the café and sell out fast when a tour bus stops in.

This is the place where one can track the mountain gorillas through both the stomach and the pocket. Every meal shared and every product purchased contributes to the social conservation of the great apes and their habitat. Be part of the drive to protect these magnificent primates, support local communities, and preserve the ecosystems they call home for generations to come.

The environment is quite pleasant, located near the main road. The coffee is quite unique, and it's also an organization that contributes to the gorilla community. The place isn't very big, but it's a good spot to grab a coffee on your way to the airport. The staff are very friendly, making it a nice place to take a break on the main road.

Visited Gorilla Conservation Cafe for lunch and a coffee. The Cafe is a short walk from Victoria Mall and has a very cute outdoor seating area that blocks most noise from the nearby busy road. Inside the cafe, there are bags of medium roast coffee available for purchase (500g for 45,000 UGX); you can also purchase copies of the books that have been written about the local efforts towards sustainable coffee and gorilla conservation. The cafe walls also display numerous newspaper & magazine articles regarding local efforts towards sustainable coffee and gorilla conservation. The staff were welcoming and friendly with good humor and plenty of jokes. I enjoyed a pot of the African Coffee (pot of coffee with cream, 2-3 cups) and the chicken sandwich. I also departed with two bags of coffee beans to bring back home. The Cafe accepts credit cards but prefers cash in UGX. WiFi is not available at the cafe
