Steel band, rum punch and a sunset 490 feet up

The view alone is worth the climb: 490 feet above English Harbour, with Montserrat visible on a clear day. This 1780s gun battery watched ships for two centuries before it started watching sunsets instead.

Sunday is the big night, 4:30 to 9:30pm: barbecue, rum punch, and a steel band sliding into reggae as the sun drops. Thursday runs a smaller version, and locals argue over which one wins.

This is a really fun place to hang out on Sunday nights. The advice is to go early at 4:30pm. Be prepared to queue for food and/or drinks. It’s actually much more interesting after sunset and the place fills with more locals, rather than just tourists! There is usually a steel band and then some stage entertainment.

Amazing views. Walk down the trail for some great picture opportunities. A little crowded but still plenty of space. Food and drink options were also great.

Sunday at Shirley Heights Lookout is one of the great Caribbean experiences that has nothing to do with luxury resorts and everything to do with the real soul of Antigua. The old military lookout station at the top of the hill above English Harbour transforms every Sunday afternoon into a barbecue party with a steel drum band, local rum punch flowing freely, and views across the harbor and the southern coast of the island that are genuinely among the most beautiful in the entire Caribbean. The barbecue itself is the real thing — chicken and ribs slow-cooked and served with local sides, nothing fancy, nothing pretentious. The crowd is a beautiful mix of locals, sailors anchored in the harbor, and visitors who were smart enough to be told about this. By sunset the steel band gives way to reggae, the dancing starts, and the whole hill becomes the best party on the island. This is Antigua at its most authentic and joyful. An absolute must.

It's a must do on the island either Thursday or Sunday night. Great fun, great music and vibes. Lots of queues for food and drink so there's a nack ro getting served with timing too. All in a great experience

Fun local festive vibes. Live band and dj later. sunsets are incredible. Beware of the rum punch. They taste like more, but will give you a kick from behind. If you go 2hrs before sunset, seating shouldn't be a problem.
