Coffee, gelato and gear from the same desk

The same desk builds a picnic pack around whatever the plan is: a paddle on Lac Beauvert or a day on the Icefields Parkway. Embark arrived with the lodge's CAD $100 million overhaul, taking over from Fitzhugh's Fine Foods.

There's a barista bar and provisions counter with pastries and sandwiches, plus adventure gear. It's priced like a resort outlet because it is one, the only spot on that side of the lake open from six each morning.

Good to know

• Open daily 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., which makes it the earliest coffee on the resort side of the lake.
• Picnic and BBQ packs need to be ordered ahead if you want them for a specific morning.
