Five lawyers and a designer take on Chile's book chains

None of the owners are booksellers by trade, which makes it stranger that Compañía Libros feels this assured. They opened on level 1 of Cenco Costanera, the mall at the foot of the Gran Torre in Providencia, and went straight at a market Feria Chilena del Libro and Antártica have split for decades.

The shelves lean literary over commercial: narrative, poetry, philosophy and social sciences sit next to children's books and science. Inside a shopping centre, it still reads as independent, open 10am to 9pm daily, later than most Santiago bookshops.

Good to know

• It keeps mall hours (10am to 9pm, seven days) which is later than almost any bookshop in Santiago.
• Level 1 of Cenco Costanera, near the Vitacura-side entrance rather than the food floors.
