The cafe Lautoka's council built inside its own garden

A city council spending FJD530,000 to build a coffee shop is odd enough. That it sits inside Lautoka's botanical garden, a short walk from the centre, makes it stranger and better. Krishan Mudaliar and Komal Karishma Prasad run it in partnership with the council itself.

The pitch is simple: coffee, cake, a bench in the shade instead of a plastic chair at the roadside stalls. In a sugar mill and port town, a paid green space with a cafe attached still feels new.
