A 1910 barge turned wine bar on the Rhône, facing the Palais des Papes

Vinotage runs from a barge built in 1910, moored on the Rhône with the Palais des Papes right across the water. Four wine-loving friends had been planning it since 2012, and finally opened the doors in March 2024. Onboard: more than 200 wine references sourced directly from growers across France, plus local products and small-producer specialties.

The bar keeps a seasonal calendar rather than staying open year-round, running from late February to late December and closing through the coldest months. It's the only wine bar in Avignon with a view of the papal palace from the water.

Overall, a pleasant place with tasty wines and food that reflects the regional cuisine. While the dishes are enjoyable, the overall quality is fairly average and could be improved to match the great setting. Still, it’s worth stopping by for a glass of wine if you’re in the area.

High hopes for the wine barge across from our hotel. The wine knowledge was impressive, however the wine list unnecessarily extensive/ expensive and the food underwhelming. Don't show on an empty stomach- we didn't eat all day following our travels and it didn't quite hit the spot.

By far one of the most memorable parts of our trip to France. Not only was the atmosphere beautiful, the wine list and food amazing. The staff literally made us feel like family by the time we left. We went 3 times on our trip, and I wished we could have gone more. It has the most beautiful views of the city of Avignon. I can’t wait to come back the next time we are here!

Fantastic experience that was so good, we went back twice within a few days! Very friendly and knowledgeable staff with a very well curated wine list with wines from across France (great Burgundy selections!), and delicious but simple and approachable food. The woman who i believe to be the owner is exceptionally charming and very thoughtful. She remembered us both after only one visit, and really helped to make my 40th birthday a memorable day! Don't change a thing, you are all amazing at Vinotage!
