Sleep in a cell block, drink coffee in the old prison yard

Das Kittchen turns a former prison on Kellerstraße into a hotel with about 30 rooms built inside the old cell blocks. The building dates to around 1890 and held prisoners until the 1990s, and architect Cindy Kruske kept that history visible rather than covering it up.

A year after opening, operator Christopher Lunke added a café in the old prison courtyard, now used for daytime coffee, readings and concerts. It's one of Wismar's more talked about places to stay for exactly that reason.

Great location. Automatic system of the doors. Friendly personal. Design of historical prison. Room is smal, but Ok. Toilet and shower is in very tiny place, and no full close wall between toilet and sleeping place. It's not comfortable. But thanks to organize - there are additional toilets and shower on the floor. It helps.

Hotel has no air conditioning but provides a big standing fan. Windows have proper blackout curtains. Staff at desk was very helpful and appologised after saying most hotels in lubeck have no air- conditioning. This hotel is much better than Babette Guldsmeden Copenhagen hotel chain with ignorant and unappologetic reception when they have blood- stained sheets.

Place was a great experience for our family of 7. Only suggestions would be to put shelf’s and bat mats in the shower. There was water on the hallway floor. Breakfast was stellar.

We nice and original place. Nice and clean rooms and ideally placed in the center of the city. A truly inspiring stay in a beautiful historical city.
