Au Détour

Dark roast and madeleines, with the furniture for sale
That chair you're sitting on? It might have a price tag. Au Détour is a café and French junk shop in one, tucked into Hon-Amanuma, past Ogikubo, where the tables and lamps are stock as much as decor.
The coffee's roasted dark, old Tokyo style rather than Nordic, and madeleines run 300 yen. Suginami is where you land when the city centre has worn you out.

This is my favorite cafe in terms of atmosphere, and the coffee was amazing!

A super stylish cafe in Tokyo where you can enjoy Paris ☕️ The moment you step inside, you're enveloped in the stylish owner, antique furniture and decorations, and music, and you truly feel like you're in Paris 🇫🇷 The owner was very kind and chatted with me, and even though I went alone, I had a wonderful time ☺️ I was allowed to take lots of photos inside the cafe, and they even took some photos of me by the chairs. It made for a lovely memory 📷 I will definitely visit again when I'm in Tokyo. Next time, I want to try the madeleines 🍽️ They seem to hold various events, so I recommend checking out their Instagram ☺️ It's a short walk from Asagaya, but it's a wonderful cafe that's well worth the trip.

My favorite new cafe of the year! I found the most wonderful cafe of the year. Located a little distance from any train station, the shop has no prominent sign, and you can't see inside from the outside. But when you open the door and step inside, you're transported to an incredibly otherworldly, antique world. The space, reflecting the owner's exquisite taste, was absolutely beautiful. The building, originally a bedding shop, has been self-renovated, and antique furniture, cute French雑貨 (miscellaneous goods), and small items are displayed everywhere. Every corner is picturesque, and the elegant and tranquil atmosphere was truly impressive. When I visited, there were no other customers, so I had the luxurious space all to myself for a while, and I was able to relax without worrying about the time. The owner was very friendly, kind, and approachable, and I really enjoyed chatting with them. While there are many cafes in Tokyo that call themselves "antique-style," this place is neither "antique-style" nor "antique-like." It's a genuine antique cafe, like a small family cafe nestled in the French countryside. Surrounded by the atmosphere of European antiques, the financiers and tea I enjoyed tasted even better than usual, and I had a truly wonderful time.

Cluttered atmosphere more like an antique shop, but definitely feels Frenchist. Many French books, an aged French flag, and the background music is "Souvenirs De Paris" a compilation by various artists. I counted about 20 seats, but you'd have to move stuff around to sit in some of them. The expresso machine was out of order today, but I wanted iced coffee anyway. Wi-Fi available on request. Both the chocolate biscuit and the coffee were well above average. Definitely a strong four stars. (Still can't say five without knowing about the consistency. Quite unlikely on a first visit unless I wind up talking with some regulars.)

This shop is filled with authentic antique furnishings, yet it's unpretentious and easy to enter. It's not the kind of "artificial retro" that's common these days (though I like that kind of thing too), but rather a place where you can immerse yourself in a "genuine" atmosphere. And yet, it's very relaxing. The coffee is delicious. The crème brûlée madeleine is also delicious. The owner's thoughtfulness was wonderful.
