100,000 books, 223 seats: Bunkitsu's biggest pay-to-read store yet

Bunkitsu invented the pay-to-read bookstore in Roppongi back in 2018. You pay admission, read anything on the shelves, and leave whenever you want. This fourth location, inside NEWoMan Takanawa, is the biggest yet: over 1,000 tsubo of floor space, roughly 100,000 books, and 223 seats.

Browsing the shelves is free. What costs money is the lounge, about 1,100 yen an hour, which covers coffee, tea, power outlets and Wi-Fi. It's a bet that people will still pay to sit and read in a city that keeps losing bookstores. Weekends, the 223 seats go fast.

Good to know

  • Browsing the bookstore floor is free; the paid reading lounge and cafe area charges by time (around 1,100 to 1,650 yen per hour) and comes with coffee or tea, power outlets and Wi-Fi.
  • It's inside NEWoMan Takanawa South, the mall at Takanawa Gateway station - allow time to find the 5th floor.

Following my visit to Olive's shared lounge, I went to Bunkitsu. I know there's one in Roppongi, but today I went to the one at Takanawa Gateway. I was able to relax and think quite well, so I'd like to use it again if I have the chance. No membership registration is required; you wear an ID card-like strap around your neck and pick up an available seat. There are several types of seats, and I chose one with a nice view. Drinks include coffee, green tea, and iced coffee. Olive had snacks, but this one didn't. Apparently, you can order sweets from Ogawa Coffee, but today I focused on my thinking. The view overlooking the station is quite nice. There's a cafe adjacent to it on the same floor, but the advantage of this place is that it's even quieter. The seats overlooking the station seem to be popular and were taken first. I was able to quickly move and sit down when one became available. I spread out my notebook and wrote, read a book on my Kindle, and even dozed off a little – I was very satisfied. This made me think I might try the Roppongi one too.

I learned about this wonderful bookstore from Misato Ugaki's YouTube channel and decided to visit! It's a beautiful bookstore with a great selection of books! The book cover they give you when you make a purchase is also cute 🤍 and I also got a bookmark 🔖 in a refreshing light blue color! Every time I go to a bookstore, it's so much fun just seeing the books that have changed the lives of the booksellers and the books they've worked on! They also have something like a lucky bag of books, which I would definitely like to buy when I have some extra money!

Visited on May 3, 2026. 1040 days remaining. I'm so happy to see a bookstore in a commercial facility! And what's more, the selection is incredible. Plus, it has a book cafe! It feels like heaven! Despite the fee, customers were steadily coming and going. This book cafe allows you to stay for 30 minutes for 500 yen, with free drinks. You can move freely between the panoramic window corner overlooking the train tracks and the table seating area next to the densely packed bookshelves. You can also buy your favorite drinks and food to relax. I can't eat much right now because I just had dental surgery, but the mini bread-like food items looked delicious. You apply to use the cafe at the counter, and payment is made at the end.

Located in NEWoMan Takanawa South, this is a currently trending "stay-in bookstore." Honestly, this isn't just any bookstore. It's more like a "book theme park." The store boasts over 1000 square meters of space and approximately 100,000 books, creating an intellectually stimulating environment just by walking around. Another distinctive feature is the "lounge-style area where you pay an entrance fee to spend time." You can enjoy a luxurious time surrounded by books while sipping coffee and light snacks. Inside, there are: - A reading space for quiet immersion - A lounge where you can enjoy the scenery - An area for working or conversing The ability to use different areas for different purposes is quite excellent. And above all, the design of the space is fascinating. The winding corridors and bookshelves with varying levels create a sense of "exploration," and before you know it, time has flown by. ✔Key Points • An overwhelming scale with approximately 100,000 books • Cafe attached, perfect for long stays • Lounges that can be used for various purposes • Enjoy the fun of "chance encounters" with books Not just a place to buy books, 👉 A spot where you can have a new experience of "spending time with books." Highly recommended not only for book lovers, but also for those who want to work, refresh, or enrich their alone time 📚✨

A play-friendly bookstore on the fifth floor of NEWoMan. I like the Roppongi branch too, but this one offers free admission and has a play area for children, making it a great choice for families with kids. The picture book section is spacious and thoughtfully designed, with steps that small children can play, shopping carts for kids, a scenic area where babies can crawl, and a corner where children can play with BørneLund educational toys. Of course, there’s also a wide selection of books and magazines for adults. It’s an urban playground perfect for a casual visit on a leisurely weekend. There’s also a paid café area, so it’s recommended for those who want to spend some quiet time.
