The beach bar that closed, then came back renovated

Gecko Lounge has sat on this stretch of Cape Maclear beach for years. It went dark for a full renovation and came back as the new Gecko Lounge in November 2025. The pool, jacuzzi and beachfront bar stayed; the rooms and kitchen behind them got rebuilt.

Regulars have argued about the change online ever since, some missing the old version and others calling it the beach's newest gem. Either way, the comments prove how much the bar mattered.

The customer service is amazing. We had our anniversary there and they made sure to make us feel special. The location is perfect for sunset watching and if you want to stroll around the beach. The chef is amazing. We had fresh fish and a lovely steak

I’ve been to several places in the area, and this one has the best Wi-Fi in town (Starlink)! It’s a wonderful restaurant and lodge with a swimming pool overlooking the lake and the sunset. The staff are incredibly friendly and truly care about their guests. I’ve visited multiple times and ordered both drinks and food, and I’ve never been disappointed. Just be sure to double-check your order, as they’re often very busy and occasional mistakes can happen. They also helped me find someone to exchange money, which isn’t easy in this small village like it is in Lilongwe. Thank you very much for everything 🙏🏻

The hotel is in an amazing spot, right on the lake with the most beautiful views. You hear the lake waves from your room and wake up to the beautiful lake view and the villagers at the lake. So peaceful and beautiful. But the best is the service and vibe. The people here are aoo kind. Layes back vibe and amazing pool with view.
