The only place on the island for a proper coffee, right by Ewa Beach

Tropicana sits just outside the Capelle & Partner complex at Ewa Beach, and locals will tell you it's the only place on Nauru that makes a decent cup of coffee. The kitchen mixes Nauruan, Chinese and Filipino cooking without much ceremony: longganisa sausage with fried eggs, dumplings, and a version of fish and chips that's distinctly local.

There's a veranda looking out toward the beach, and it works as much as a meeting spot as a cafe, the kind of place where you run into half the island's expat community over a single coffee. Grab a table there rather than inside if the weather's holding.

• Order the longganisa and eggs if you're there in the morning.
