Vines crawl over broken columns, expedition props line the walls, and the courtyard looks like a rediscovered temple. Explorer, the Kampala Serena Hotel's signature Italian spot on Kintu Road, feels closer to a film set than a hotel restaurant.
Handmade pastas and wood-fired dishes anchor the menu. The five-star setting pulls a different crowd than Kololo's newer openings, think business travelers, diplomatic dinners and Kampala families celebrating something. It's also one of the anchor names during Kampala Restaurant Week each July.

Explorer Restaurant at The Kampala Serena is one place I love going back to, time and again. It’s a rare combination of amazingly grounded cuisine, precise service, and an atmosphere that feels both refined and genuinely welcoming. The cocktails are quite good—creatively crafted by their undoubtedly experienced Bar Man, balanced, and increasingly memorable as the evening unfolds. The atmosphere is legit: polished without feeling pretentious, with a vibe that invites thoughtful conversation as well as relaxed dining. The restaurant team is awesome, and I’d like to single out Gloria. Her charming smile is amazing, and she brings a level of warmth and intention to every interaction. Gloria is very welcoming and attentively ensures guests feel both seen and valued. When she’s on duty, I feel well covered and assured that my dining experience will be seamless. Gloria embodies professionalism and candor in equal measure. Her genuine approach elevates the entire visit, and she deserves major recognition for her impact. Thank you, Gloria, for consistently making my Explorer visits spectacular. Your presence transforms ordinary meals into memorable experiences. The lamb at this restaurant is to die for—succulent, flavorful, and perfectly prepared, worth ordering every time you visit. The food is average but the service is amazing. We had an amazing pumpkin soup, but the lasagne wasn’t that good. However, the stake was good and well cooked.
