Mestiizo

Mexican cooking, Twin Cities ingredients, on 13th Avenue

Skip the pizza and pasta lining Northeast's busiest restaurant row and duck into the one doing something else entirely. Mestiizo runs Mexican technique through local ingredients in a small dining room that fills up fast with neighborhood regulars.

It's a newer addition to the strip, and it already reads like one of the better reasons to walk 13th Avenue end to end.

I wish I lived closer! As a celiac, Mestiizo is a gluten free food haven. I love the birria egg rolls, sushi rolls, and innovative cocktails. One of my favorite cocktails is the Ruby Rhapsody! The service and atmosphere is always great. Mestiizo is great for special occasions or midweek happy hour, we always look forward to visiting.

We're a big fan of this space, which has had several restaurants in the past 30 years. Mestiizo has an interesting fusion menu of Asian and Latin. We each had a beverage and small dishes. One vegetarian sushi roll, three tacos, and their birria egg roll. The egg roll was our least favorite. The meat filling tasted good, but it kind of overpowered the rest of the flavors, which included a very bland avocado puree. The sushi roll was the standout, with crispy sweet potato. The three tacos were different shredded meats, including beef, pork, and chicken. All three were quite good, helped by handmade tortillas using nixtamalized cornmeal from their neighbor restaurant, Nixta. The cocktail menu was interesting, and we enjoyed watching what was brought out from the kitchen and served at other tables, in lovely and intriguing configurations. For dessert, we had bunuelos, which was prepared in a very light fashion, integrating purple ube and a tiny scoop of coconut ice cream. We hope this business has some longevity. Will probably try it again.

Interesting spot with a nice atmosphere although the food overall was nothing special. The rice bowl was definitely the best thing we had as everything else was pretty average. The ceviche was just straight up not good at all and basically tasted like ginger and not much else. I think a menu switch up might do this place some favors as even the recommended sushi wasn’t anything unique. I probably wouldn’t go back but if you live in the area it would be worth stopping in for the sushi bowl which was excellent.

I absolutely love this place! I’ve been wanting to check this place out for a while. I made reservations online, which I highly recommend, as the place is relatively small. Upon arriving, we were seated within 5-10 minutes. We had a booth, which was a vibe. The lighting is very dim and intimate. The server was very knowledgeable and helpful. I ordered the tuna tostada and the ceviche. Everything arrived fairly quickly and was absolutely delicious. I also ordered a few NA drinks that were phenomenal. The service was phenomenal from the server to the person delivering the food. I would absolutely return!

The Mexican-Asian fusion concept was incredibly well executed and every dish felt creative without trying too hard. The birria egg rolls were easily one of the highlights: crispy, rich, flavorful, and perfect with the dipping sauce. The sushi with beet sauce had amazing twist with layered flavors that worked surprisingly well together. The octopus, was outstanding, tender, smoky, and cooked perfectly. Even the cookie dessert was unique and memorable with flavors you don’t normally see paired together. Cocktails were also excellent with a great balance between sweet and citrus flavors and complemented the food really well. Great atmosphere and creative menu.
