OK Chicken & Khao Soi

Earl Ninsom's northern Thai spot on Division
The khao soi is the reason to come: coconut curry broth poured over egg noodles, topped with a tangle of the same noodles fried crisp. Order the fried chicken with sticky rice alongside it and split both across the table.
It's the newest project from Earl Ninsom, whose Langbaan and Paadee already anchor Portland's Thai food scene, and this one turns north, toward khao soi and the sour, herbal salads Isaan cooking is known for.

We came here recently for a friend's bday dinner and had a great experience. We ordered a good amount of food to share family style, which allowed us to try a majority of the items. I really enjoyed the Khao Soi, Nam Prik Noom, Yum Moo Yang, Sai Oua, Moo Sam Chan Yang, and wings. I thought everything we got were good and worth trying out. The service was pretty efficient and friendly.

If you love bold, authentic Northern Thai flavors, this place is a must. The papaya salad has a great punch to it, and the grilled pork with the chili dipping sauce was excellent. Overall, the meal was delicious and deeply savory, just slightly on the saltier side. Awesome, relaxed atmosphere to grab a drink and hang out.

We checked out OK Chicken and Khao Soi about a month after their opening. We ordered Khai Jeow Laab Mueng, Khao Soi Chicken, Gaeng Hung Lay plus a couple of cocktails that night. We came excited and left disappointed. The service was fine, but the dishes arrived barely warm, this immediately dropped ours enthusiasm. A couple of dishes lacked that signature Thai cuisine punch: spicy depth, heat, richness and brightness of the balance. Also they didn’t have chili vinegar or crispy chili oil other condiments on the table for customers who need to adjust for their taste buds. With Portland’s strong Thai food scene, it’s hard not to compare.

we were super excited to try this place. we made sure we got in line at 4.30 pm on saturday, second in line. like some of their other restaurants, the menu is short and targeted. unlike their other restaurants in their portfolio, it’s not clear the “spin” or objective in the menu in this restaurant. we tried a cross section of five items. the pomelo salad on the specials is the stand out and khao soi noodles were excellent. everything else was solid and ok, but not wowwy-zowy. the server staff was a mix of types, some being very portland (trying too hard) and others with that super professional comfortable food-loving expertise. fun experience, food was solid, good bar… however, unlike some of their other places, i am not sure i’d wait in a long queue to eat here.
