Cafe Lewi

Chef-run cafe hiding on a quiet Lewisham corner
The room is plain, but the kitchen isn't messing around. Cafe Lewi treats a specials board like it matters, swapping it out more often than the regular menu, so two visits in a week rarely look the same.
It's a short walk from Lewisham station, though foot traffic stays light and weekday mornings run quiet. Weekends fill up fast, so get there early if you want a table.

Hidden gem! Food was absolutely to die for — small menu, but every dish is well thought out and executed perfectly. Service was amazing, we were well taken care of, and food and drinks came out fast. Highly recommend!

What a gem. Firstly, they did Lewisham a massive service by beautifully restoring a decrepit heritage building with love and attention to detail. The food was really good, a little special but also not pretentious. Great coffee and tea. Special shout out for the great service. We walked in with a toddler and when it became clear that he was eager to go and play they wrapped everything to go with no fuss. They look like like they're run by and staffed by really warm people who love what they do and care about the locals. Walked from Summer Hill which has a billion cafes to try them out. New favourite.

Gorgeous little spot, close to Lewisham train station. Went in trying to keep expectations in check, but it lived up to the hype. Limited menu of delicious brunch items, cooked to perfection. No crumb was left behind. Warm and friendly service.

I first discovered this hidden gem in Sydney’s Inner West while catching up with a friend who lives nearby, and it was both our first time visiting. We were genuinely impressed. She ordered the NZ King Ora Salmon Confit with potato hash, avocado, sorrel, and Yarra Valley salmon roe, while I chose the steak sandwich. Both dishes were beautifully presented and delicious. The latte was smooth and perfectly made, and we finished with a strawberry pastry topped with light cream, which was fresh, light, and the perfect sweet treat. The food, atmosphere, and service left such a positive impression that I recently chose this café to celebrate our anniversary. Unfortunately, this latest visit was disappointing. I ordered the steak sandwich medium-well, but it arrived closer to medium-rare. The steak was not properly seared and contained a significant amount of tendon and gristle, making it chewy and difficult to eat. Given how much I enjoyed my first experience and the fact that we chose the café for a special occasion, this was quite disappointing. I still appreciate the café’s atmosphere and the quality of many of its menu items, but I hope greater attention can be paid to consistency and ensuring dishes are cooked as ordered.

Exquisite. The steak frites night was well worth it. Great little restaurant. Staff are delightful. Take your mum there. She’ll love it.
