SŪN

Japanese sandwiches from a chef the founders met in Japan
Two Brussels filmmakers opened SŪN after meeting Mayu, a Japanese food specialist, while filming in Japan. She now makes the onigiri and sandwiches, paired with espresso from local roaster Torrefactory.
The European quarter isn't short on coffee shops, but the warm, minimalist room and the specifically Japanese menu set it apart. Open weekday mornings through lunch, nothing more.

I got an absolutely delicious Mango Sticky Rice Slushie from SŪN yesterday - and then accidentally left a semi-important document on the table. Luckily, the team are absolute angels! I reached out to them on Insta and they quickly helped me even though it was way after opening hours! The café is like a bright and relaxing little oasis in the middle of a busy neighbourhood, making it the perfect place to wind down and have a nice drink and a snack along with it.

It does several things genuinely well, starting with the menu, which is so charming and well designed that you will briefly consider asking if it is for sale. Everything after that is decent without being particularly memorable. The space is nicely put together and the vibe of the people lands somewhere between European bureaucracy on a lunch break and expat brunch culture, which is either exactly your thing or a mild warning depending on who you are. The onigiri is fine. It is also five euros, which is a price point that makes complete sense until you remember that in Japan an onigiri is essentially a convenience store snack, the kind of thing you grab at a 7/11 for the equivalent of pocket change between trains. The journey from Tokyo convenience store staple to Brussels artisanal rice ball involves apparently quite a significant markup somewhere along the way. If you are in the neighbourhood it is a perfectly good reason to drop by.

I’m on a quest to try all the cinnamon buns in the city, and I started with Sun. Pretty good; slightly on the dry side, but nicely cinnamon-y. Happy to have finally stopped by after months of eyeing it. Thank you, Yasin and Bora.

Fantastic little spot at (re)Space in the EU Quarter! The staff are all so smiley and super attentive. Love their food & their coffee is to die for!! Go grab a little slice of sun if you’re in the neighbourhood. 😊

The best café (espresso bar) I went in town! Its staff is very friendly and tries to help you for the best coffee choice. There aren't many seats maybe maximum twenty of them. Better to avoid peak hours. Everything is tidy and good working wifis. Hope to revisit soon!
