Coffee and canal views in Molenbeek, lunch till late
Naoufel's 120-square-metre space on Quai du Hainaut looks straight out over the Brussels canal, artisan-made furniture and specialty beans setting the tone. It doesn't rush anyone through: lunch keeps going well into the afternoon.
Molenbeek-Saint-Jean isn't the first neighbourhood people think of for a canal-side coffee, which is part of why Koul feels like a find rather than a stop on a list.

The food was well crafted and amazingly composed. You could feel that there was thought in the creation of the menu. The coffee was really good and the cinnamon bun was fluffy and had a good balance of the sweetness and earthiness of the spices. The cafe itself is quite for a cozy ambiance.

One of my favorite brunch and coffee spots in Brussels. The food is always amazing and original, seriously, very good. The kitchen and bar staff are super friendly. Yes, it can be a bit slow when it’s busy, but it’s worth the wait. The coffee is really good and reasonably priced, and so is the food. The pastries used to be better, but their Basque cheesecake, cookie, and peanut butter banana bread are top tier.

If you're looking for a spot in Brussels that perfectly captures that 'urban-cool' vibe without trying too hard, Koul is exactly where you need to be. It’s one of those gems in the city that manages to feel both trendy and welcoming at the same time. The atmosphere is vibrant and carries an energy that is uniquely Brussels. Whether you’re stopping in for a quick bite or settling in for a longer session, the service is consistently sharp and friendly. The food is fresh, flavorful, and presented with a modern flair that makes it totally Instagram-worthy. It’s refreshing to find a place that prioritizes quality ingredients while maintaining a laid-back, approachable environment. It has quickly become my go-to recommendation for anyone asking where to find a reliable, high-quality experience in the heart of the capital. Truly a standout addition to the local scene!

I first heard of this place through TikTok (sign of the times) and, with my curiosity piqued and an open Sunday afternoon, decided to investigate. This relative new arrival on the Brussels coffee scene - less than a year old - had its work cut out for itself, with the ever excellent Mok right across the canal offering some stiff competition. Remarkably, it proves more than up to the task, as Koul lives up to its name by offering quality coffee and tasty food in a tasteful environment. While the surroundings, as well as the building itself, could do with giving a better impression, the indoor space - an airy, open-plan painted in gentle tones, provided a welcoming atmosphere, complemented by the background sound of jazz and soul standards. The place clearly had already found its audience - students and young professionals, here for a relaxed chat with friends, a first date, or a little extra time with their laptop. In spite of this, I swiftly found my seat, right after giving my order to a friendly and helpful barista. I went for the Espresso Tonic - a reliable classic, refeshing and flavourful - and the Turkish Poached Eggs - no Avocado Toasts here, with the accent more squarely on levantine cuisine. While the waiting times were on the longer end of reasonable, they remained acceptable, and the food itself was excellent. One of the poached eggs had its white a tad on the runnier side, but as far as the flavours were concerned, I was delighted - the pairing with labneh and a refreshing salad was perfect for weather and season, and the homemade flatbread was the ideal side to scoop up and devour the dish in more or less civilised fashion. I spent enough time there to warrant pulling out my laptop, at which point, I made a slightly unfortunate discovery: both sets of plugs in my immediately vicinity were non-functional. This seemed to be a local issue, however, as having acquired another seat, the plugs there were perfectly able to save my battery from certain doom. My work done, I left having paid a perfectly acceptable monetary tribute - the prices, fully acceptable for location, quality, and portion size, shouldn't cripple anyone's wallet anytime soon. While I have yet to try their coffee specialties, as well as other dishes, I am already deeply satisfied-and look forward to my next visit.

The best place in the 'hood for coffee, Wi-Fi and a simple egg breakfast made to order (mine was 3 eggs, onions and cheese.) We are in the middle of a migrant North African, Middle Eastern and such neighbourhood.
