Indian cooking that cuts through Mercer Street's steakhouse strip

Ask what just came off the tandoor. That's the move at PUNCH, where the room runs loud on purpose and the food does something the Entertainment District mostly doesn't: real Indian cooking, not steak, not a nightclub.

It landed fifth on Toronto Life's 2026 list, and the location is exactly why it stands out.

Punch offers a well-executed fusion of Indian and British cuisine in a refined, elegant setting. The ambiance is refined with illuminated wine displays, and beautifully set tables, creating an intimate and upscale dining experience. We started with the Scotch egg, which featured a crisp exterior and a flavourful center. While slightly saltier than my preference, it was still enjoyable. The fish and chips were excellent. The haddock was light, flaky, and perfectly cooked, and the chips (more like home fries), were satisfying. The tartar sauce had a subtle Indian-inspired twist, adding an interesting layer to the dish. The biryani, which we were informed when we ordered, required extra preparation time, was well worth the wait. Presented sealed under a dough crust and mixed tableside, it delivered authentic, aromatic flavours, and was enjoyed after we had shared the fish and chips. Dessert was a highlight as well. The sticky toffee pudding was rich, moist, and an excellent finish to the meal. Overall, Punch blends British and Indian influences with creativity. The concept works well and the atmosphere elevates the entire experience. The service was excellent, from the bartender who we went to until our table was ready, to our attentive waitress, who was knowledgeable and helpful as we ordered our meals. Highly recommended.

What an amazing experience. It had been a long time that I got to experience hospitality in such pleasurable manner. Josh was amazing with his service and he set a new standard of how a fine dine experience should feel like. Super attentive and kind. Chef Rohit & Chef Amit did such an amazing job with the food. We tried Samosa, Chicken Pot pie, Coleslaw salad, Sausage roll, Scotch Egg and Lamb chops. Each and every dish was executed to perfection. If you’re in for an experience, definitely visit.

Had dinner for 2 here. Got a corner table with a great view of the whole restaurant. High ceilings and lovely chandeliers. Our server was Kenny who was very welcoming, made great recommendations and explained each dish. We got the hamachi ceviche and chat-slaw to start. Both were very flavourful and refreshing. However I wish we only got one them because they were hard to distinguish from one another as we kept eating. We also got 3 large plates. The chicken biryani is a MUST! So pleasant to eat and lots of flavours that were not overwhelming. Also, a very generous portion of chicken. The beef Wellington was also really good with tender meat paired with sauces. The butter chicken pot pie was a bit disappointing. I’m used to sweet creamy butter chicken but this one was more saucy and savoury. Tasted more like a meat stew. It was good but didn’t feel like this dish had the Indian influence as the others. For dessert, got the gulab jamun. The warm doughnut looks dense but was surprisingly light. Goes great with the icecream and lemon sauce. Masala chai was a bit too sweet and tasted like an instant coffee-like version. Overall, I really like the dinner and would come again for other dishes.

First time at punch for Mother’s Day prixe fixe menu. I had no idea it’s actually inside a hotel and the entrance itself was quite eye catching with the royal emblem logo. We were greeted at the door and swiftly taken to our seat in the huge old classic glam dining hall with chandeliers. The hall was quite crowded and were given a choice of where to sit so we chose a corner seat. A live singer made the mood lively. Complimentary mimosas were served along with the Mother’s Day brunch menu which had a cute classic newspaper aesthetic. We asked to switch out to non alcoholic mimosas and were served swiftly. Then came the appetizers, paneer en creut and the chicken samosas, both were delicious. The mains took a tad bit longer , the presentation of the Kerala beef fry was so lovely. The breakfast kulcha was good but the sunnyside eggs on top was a weird combo, but I had forgotten to tell our server to cancel the eggs when ordering. The dessert was a lovely buffet with pistachio cheesecakes rhubarb cake fresh fruits cookies and mousse cups. Although the food and seating options could have been better, the ambiance, service and warmth of the staff made the experience well worth it. Everyone from the lady at the door who received us and also offered to take a our pic at the bar when we were leaving to our server to the guy at dessert buffet and the floor manager who was attentive and the live singer who wished Mother’s Day on the speaker. Overall good experience. Happy to find halal dining with ambience! Would definitely come back again.

This was my first time dining here, and overall it was a good experience. Ambiance: The dining room feels elevated with a multi-story ceiling space within the hotel with chandeliers as signature elements. However, the chandeliers would switch between brighter and dimmer what felt like every fifteen minutes throughout the evening which was distracting. Service: The staff were very attentive, checking in regularly, providing great context and information about each dish, removing plates in between meals, and cleaning the table linen. The executive chef came out to present one of the courses personally. Food: We had the tasting menu. The amuse-bouche was a standout and one of my favorite dishes. It was a strong opening with a burst of layered flavors in a single bite. I appreciated their re-interpretation of traditional dishes, and the sauces were a particular highlight for me: flavourful, with great depth and a smooth texture. Plating received clear attention. One course featured skewers served on a mini-grill with charcoal underneath, adding thoughtfulness to both presentation and the dining experience. The rice dish had great texture and flavour balance - sweet and savory with a satisfying crunch. The shrimp entrée was tasty, but unfortunately slightly overcooked and tough. Following the entrée, a guava sorbet palate cleanser was served. My server explained it was designed to evoke Indian street food, with the fruit paired with black salt. The flavours worked well for a palate cleanser, but the portion was too much in my opinion for that purpose, almost filling right before the two-course dessert. I think a quenelle of the sorbet with maybe some crunchy component might have been better for just a transition and reset from the savoury courses to dessert. The two desserts were interesting; I preferred the chocolate one which was served warm. I had an espresso too, which was decent but acidic. Final Thoughts: They clearly put thought into both the dishes and the overall dining experience. The complimentary scone with heating instructions "for the next morning" was a thoughtful touch. There are many intriguing dishes on the menu I'd come back to try, like the Wellington.
