The hotel's name pulls from two places at once: Columbus's ship the Santa María, and the Catedral Santa María la Menor nearby. Aria Santa María occupies a sixteenth-century building on Calle Hostos in the Ciudad Colonial, turned into nine rooms.

Aria Hotels is a Greek group with small properties in Athens, the Cyclades and the Ionian islands. This is its first Caribbean hotel, and it's adding a Greek restaurant billed as the first of its kind in Santo Domingo.
