BasBas Studio: appetizing, high-quality food photography

BasBas Studio

★ 4.5 · 27 reviews Helsinki Opened 24 January 2025

The seafood-focused sibling of Baskeri & Basso, made permanent under chef Kalle Tanner

BasBas Studio had run on Pursimiehenkatu as an occasional, variably open space for the BasBas restaurant family before converting into a permanent restaurant on January 24, 2025. Chef Kalle Tanner, named Chef of the Year in Finland in 2018, joined the kitchen to anchor the transition, building a menu that leans toward seafood and fish more heavily than its sibling restaurants.

The three BasBas addresses, the original bistro, BasBas Kulma and now Studio, sit within a few blocks of each other in Punavuori, giving the group an unusual concentration in one small stretch of the neighbourhood.

BasBas studio was one of the most balanced and memorable meals I’ve had in Helsinki. The atmosphere is relaxed and intimate, with a pleasant view into the kitchen, and the cooking feels confident without trying too hard. The trout with lime and coriander was bright and precise, while the lamb tartar had real depth, lifted nicely by the oyster leaf and jalapeño. The gnocchi with pistachio and stracciatella was rich but still elegant, and the asparagus soup with roe and morel showed very good control of texture and seasoning. What stood out most was how well they use the grill: the whitefish and Iberico were both handled beautifully, with clean smoke, good doneness, and thoughtful sides. The ingredients were clearly well chosen, and the combinations felt more complex than in many places in the city. The wine pairing was enjoyable, though I would have liked it to feel a little more considered and varied. Overall, a very strong and personal dining experience. I will definitely visit once again!
