Brynja on Aðalstræti has served what a lot of Icelanders call the country's best ice cream for close to a century, out of an old shop in the south end of town. Order the soft serve, dipped or plain.

People really do detour for this, queue in the cold and everything. Grab a dipped cone and eat it down by the fjord.

    One of the best ice creams we have ever had in Iceland! The ice cream was absolutely delicious, and the quality was amazing. We would also like to give a special thank you to Ellín, who was very kind, friendly, and made our visit even more enjoyable. Her positive attitude and warm smile made the experience even better. It’s clear that she really cares about her customers. We highly recommend this place to anyone looking for amazing ice cream in Iceland.

    We loved our visit to Brynja for ice. There is such a huge selection of toppings and sauces, that it's hard to choose. Highly recommend vanilla ice, licorice sauce and strawberries. If we are in Akureyri again, we will definitely stop by for more ice! Delicious. Staff were super friendly.

    Such a delicious treat! I loved picking my toppings. After the ice cream we walked the trail in the NE corner to the botanic garden.

    We stopped at Brynja during our time in Akureyri and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The soft-serve is incredibly creamy and flavorful. We tried the classic vanilla and a couple other flavors — all excellent. It’s a small, no-frills spot but clearly a local favorite for a reason. The portions are generous and the quality is top-notch. If you’re in Akureyri, this is a must-stop. Easily the best ice cream we had on the whole trip. Highly recommend!
