Eyja Winebar & Bistro

A proper wine bar in the far north
Eyja sits on Hafnarstræti, pouring a serious list of wines by the glass alongside small plates built from Icelandic ingredients. Ask the staff where to start, they know the list cold.
Come for a couple of glasses and a spread of plates rather than a sit-down dinner. It's built for a slower night out.

During our trip around Iceland, we’ve visited a huge number of restaurants, and I’ve noticed something interesting. The problem here is almost never that the food is bad. Quite the opposite. Icelandic food is incredibly fresh, vibrant, juicy, and full of natural flavor. It feels alive in a way that’s hard to describe, and it’s very different from what you’ll find in most other countries. The real problem is steak. Just like in Dubai, very few places know how to cook it properly. You ask for medium rare, and it usually arrives medium at best—or well done. But this restaurant… this was the mother of all steaks. I honestly couldn’t believe what I was eating. It was so perfectly cooked that the meat was unbelievably juicy, tender, and full of flavor. It was the most memorable steak I’ve had anywhere in Iceland. Every bite was pure perfection. And then there was the sauce. For the first time in my life, I found a sauce I loved even more than my favorite demi-glace. It had a bright, slightly tangy, floral-berry character that complemented the beef instead of overpowering it. Together, the steak and the sauce created an unforgettable symphony of flavors. I actually walked over to personally thank the chef for the incredible experience. It wasn’t just dinner—it was a true culinary adventure. The fish was cooked just as professionally, the fries were perfectly crispy, and every plate was presented with such elegance that you start smiling the moment it arrives at your table. Without any doubt, this was the best restaurant we visited in Iceland. The quality of the ingredients, the precision of the cooking, the beautiful presentation, and the genuine passion behind every dish made this place unforgettable. We absolutely loved it and couldn’t recommend it more highly. If you’re anywhere nearby, do yourself a favor and eat here. You won’t regret it.

All was great😊😁 Ordered small plates to share. The wine by the glass changes every week. We had a great Nebbiolo from Italy. Recommend!

10/10 on everything. I had the three course meal with tomato soup, cod and creme brulee. The cod comes from the fish local fish market everyday and it tasted like it. Highly recommended.

This restaurant was perfect in everything. We have to wait for a table but that wasn’t a problem (so book in advance as it’s popular); the food was amazing, one of the best steaks ever, but everything was delicious so you can order everything from the menu. We’ve had a mix of fish/meat and vegetables plates, deserts as well. The atmosphere was very cosy and relaxing and the service was good as well. 5 well deserved stars!!
