Japan's first Western hotel, reborn under a shorter name

THE ORIENT sits above the old foreign settlement's stone-fronted blocks, and the name traces back to 1870, when this was Japan's first Western-style hotel. The original building fell in the 1995 earthquake, and the plot stayed a car park until Mitsui Fudosan built above it in 2010.

114 rooms come with four restaurants and a fourth-floor water terrace that runs indoors and out. Sannomiya station is a seven-minute walk, Motomachi about six.

Good to know

The fourth-floor water terrace and lounge are open to non-residents, and are the easiest way to see the building without booking a room.
It is a rename and relaunch, not a new hotel: the rooms and the 2010 building are the same ones.

Instantly one of our favourite hotels in Japan. The room — particularly the beds — were PERFECT for a restful sleep. As for the breakfast, I'm still salivating over the french toast we had there over a year ago! It's a very pleasant 10 or so minute walk to the nearest metro station; once you see the hustle-bustle there you'll appreciate this oasis of calm even more.

Room was spacious.Historic location. Linens and amenities in room were high-end and made our two night stay extra comfortable. Staff was very helpful and location was perfect for tourism of Kobe and Arima Onsen (just a short trip by train). I especially enjoyed the bed duvet and matching brushed cotton pyjamas which were the ultimate in refined comfort. Access to beautiful jinja (shrine), local shopping streets (fashion design houses too like Gucci, LV, Stella McCartney, diesel) and Sanomiya subways was prime.

This was one of our best hotel stays. The decor, the service, the meticulous attention to details in the room, the comfortable bedding, prime location, and most of all the beautiful and delicious breakfast spread! The complementary mini bar was a pleasant surprise too. Overall, 100% recommend to anyone staying in Kobe.

The location was a bit far from where we were visiting, and the rooms were pretty good. The service was pretty good overall we were very impressed with the fact that they gave us baby diapers and baby wipes, knowing that we had a baby. However, I was a bit disappointed because they had a room ready for us, but we weren’t allowed to have an early check-in unless we paid an extra 8000 yen. This was my first experience where our room was ready, but we had to pay extra if we wanted to check in early. I was very disappointed by this hence the low service review. However, their staff were very attentive and kind. If they could just change this minor detail instead of trying to charge guest extra for an early check-in if the room is ready, just let the guest in. We would really appreciate that. The rooms were a bit old, but they were clean.

I wish I could have given a better review than what i am. The rooms were not cleaned well enough although the beds were well made and the bathrooms too. The service at breakfast was extremely slow and on two days I didn't even get my eggs. I waited 35 mins and finally left. I also hope that at my next visit which is in a few days at the same hotel , I will get a room better placed and a better floor than being put up opposite the service cupboard and the gym . On my second stay , a few days later, the housekeeping was extremely poor. The rooms were barely cleaned and left In a very poor state. Finally the check in staff needs to learn at least basic English.
