Wine and 1990s itameshi, under the Route 20 overpass
Itameshi was what Japan called Italian food during the bubble years, and PUPA revives it deliberately, updated rather than parodied. It opened on 24 February 2026 in the arches under the Route 20 overpass at Shinjuku 3-chome.
Pasta is made fresh in house and the wine list is priced to be drunk rather than admired. Anyone who ate this food the first time round will find the menu funny in a good way.

PUPA — the name alone caught my attention when I walked past this place. It’s just too funny not to check out 😄 So I ended up coming back for lunch, and I’m very glad I did! One of my favorite things was the all-you-can-drink selection of non-alcoholic drinks. The lemonades were especially amazing, and there was a surprisingly great variety of syrups for coffee. The lunch set comes with unlimited non-alcoholic drinks and a plate of delicious fresh bread, included with your main dish. I tried the salad served in an edible bowl and the fish of the day — both were absolutely delicious. The staff were very friendly, and they also speak English, which is always a nice bonus. I’ll definitely be coming back! Next time, I want to try their Original Sour, especially the Limoncello Sour 🍋 Definitely a place worth stopping by if you’re around Shinjuku! #Shinjuku #TokyoFood #TokyoEats #TokyoFoodie #JapanTravel

Great atmosphere and such a lovely spot for a relaxed evening! My friends and I stopped by around dinner time for drinks, and we really enjoyed the atmosphere. We ordered the mushroom tapa, which unfortunately arrived cold at first. I wasn’t quite sure if it was meant to be served that way, but it was a little unexpected. That said, the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and they spoke English with us throughout the evening, which made the experience very comfortable. The service was definitely one of the highlights. Overall, we had a great time and I’d definitely recommend checking this place out, especially if you’re looking for somewhere with a nice atmosphere and friendly service. We only came in for drinks and a small tapa this time, but next time I’d love to come back and properly try the food!

Lovely Italian and tapas restaurant in the heart of Shinjuku near the station. We stumbled on it by accident and were impressed by the atmosphere, friendly staff and food. The carbonara was very tasty and the drinks great. Recommended if you were after some Italian food or tapas when in Shinjuku!
