Pizza, cold beer and a pool that never closes, on Pemba's Marginal

Most people still call it Russell's Place. The bar and pizza kitchen at Pemba Magic Lodge draw in locals and travellers who aren't even staying there, pulled by cold beer, a relaxed music-friendly vibe and a pool open round the clock.

The lodge also runs its own day trips to Ibo Island. That makes it a base for exploring the Quirimbas, beyond just a bed for the night in Pemba. It sits on the Marginal near Maringanha, a short walk from Kauri Resort and Malua Café.

• It's as much a bar as a lodge; you don't need to be a guest to drop in for a drink.
