All-day café inside a former Writers' Union palace

You're drinking coffee under painted stucco ceilings and French silk walls, on a monumental staircase the Writers' Union used for six decades. Casa Monteoru on Calea Victoriei reopened in 2026 as Grand Café de Bucarest, running from morning pastry to cocktails until 2am on weekends.

The menu is mostly international, but order the Romanian Tasting Board. Burduf cheese, jumări and Sibiu salami say more than the espresso does. Sit in the Sala Oglinzilor, where literary circles once met, and you'll get why the room matters as much as the drink.

Gorgeous historic building, but let's be honest, this place is all hype thanks to ig. They don’t take bookings, which is fair enough, but we were also told we couldn’t sit under one of the parasols, even though there was a table available, so we ended up stuck by the entrance instead. It was absolutely roasting. The mocktail selection is pretty disappointing too – only two options, while the cocktail menu goes on forever. And 32 lei for just 120ml? We waited ages for someone to come and take our order, but no one ever did, so we just left. To be fair, judging by the prices, maybe that wasn't such a bad thing.

I’m not sure if it was due to it being busy but it was the worst service we have had on our trip. We were sat down for nearly 20 minutes before someone took our order after flagging someone down we finally got someone and they even brought us someone else’s food. The food was very nice. It’s also a very lovely looking restaurant. Only complaint about food was the lamb was a bit tough and chewy

Even though I live nearby, didn't manage to test this location(previously was Monteoru here). I managed to come 3 times in a row, which is something exceptional. Great atmosphere, great service, and the food was super tasty - got pistachio tuna.

We had a wonderful evening at Grand Café de Bucharest, located in a beautiful setting with a great atmosphere. The food was excellent. The Carbonara pasta was delicious, and the Pornstar Martini Tart was absolutely sensational, one of the best desserts we have ever tried. The staff was friendly, attentive, and professional, making us feel welcome throughout the evening. A fantastic experience overall, and we look forward to coming back. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
